alexander the great

alexander the great was born in Pella, Macedonia the son of Philip of Macedon who was an excellent general and organizer. His mother was olypias, princess of Epirus. Alexander inherited the best qualities of both his parents. when he was 13 he bacme the pupil of Aristotle. He was alway eager to learn. Aristotle inspired him with a great love for literature. He played sported and exercise daily to keep his body fixed and srong. His education didn't always come from books. When he was 18 he commanded part of philip's cavalry at the battle of Chaeronea. He acted as his father ambassador to Athens. He was 20 when he became king of Macedonia while he was at war someone told the Greek people that he was dead. He then went to Thebes with his army and they surrounded the hold city. Every building in Thebes was destroyed, except for the temples and the house of the poet pinder. About 30,000 inhabitants were sold into slavery. His action broke the spirt of the rebillion in other greek states. He next plan was to conquer Persia. This had been his father plan before him. He crossed the Hellespont with an army of 35,000 soldiers in the spring of 334 b.c. he didn't have that much money, and gamble on quick victory. the persion met him on the banks of the granicus River. he stormed across the river with his cavalry. In 333 b.c. he became seriously ill. But he recovered and marched along the coast into Syria. the king of persia, darius 3 raise a large army. He capture the king camp ' including Darius wife and mother, he then marched south into Phoenicia and capture Tyre after a seven month seige. He built a causeway out to it, so that it is now a peninsula. About 8,000 Tyrians were slain and 30,000 sold into slavery. His victory over Tyre is sometime considered his greatest military achievement. the whole region submitted to him but only one person home Gaza, where brave Persion governor resisted for three month. Gaza eventually suffered the same fate as Tyre. Next he went to Egypt. Where  the egyptian welcome him as a deliverer because they hated their persion ruler. he founded a city on a strip of land between lake Mareotis and Mediterranean sea. while they were building the city he made the long dangerous march to Libyon desert. he was told that he was the son of god and would conquer the world. he got married to Roxane, the daughter of a sogdria baron. he chose babylon as the capital city. he had many plan while he became very ill with malaria at babylon. he died on june 13, 323 b.c. They place his body in a gold coffin and taken to memphis, in egypt. Later was carried to Alexanderia and place in a beatiful tomb. Alexander left no choice for a successor. His son, Alexander 4 was born after Alexander death. His leading general became governors of various areas and fought among themselves for control of the empire. But no single leader emerged and by 311 b.c. the empire split into independent state or monarchies.
